MDO/MGO upgrade - A challenge but not a problem
17-11-2009
Scandinavian Boiler Service offer solutions to MDO/MGO upgrade issues. We focus on each ship-owner’s individual needs to keep the cost at a reasonable level.
Background
According to Marpol Annex VI Sulphur content of marine fuels is limited to 0,1% from January 2010, during port stay and in specific areas at sea. In practice this forces the ships to utilize MDO/MGO as fuel when sailing in these areas.
Several issues arise before MDO/MGO upgrade can be accomplished smoothly. Basically the burner system must be examined to ensure a safe and smooth changeover solution. A thorough inspection must be carried out and eventual re-engineering be pre-approved by class.
With that said, the actual upgrade can in many cases be reduced to replacement of pumps and adjustment of the control system.
